Grid-integrated buildings
Grid-integrated buildings are emerging as a major priority and opportunity for communities. Utilities are increasingly looking to incentivize grid-integrated buildings. Homes, offices and the utility grid will start working more as a unified and coordinated system, rather than as separate and distinct entities. The result is a new paradigm for energy management, and new opportunities for savings and services. This session will introduce grid-integrated buildings, what the implications are for builders, and how they can generate revenue.

Urban wood: using trees from your building sites in your building designs
Wisconsin Urban Wood and similar networks of arborists, sawmills, and skilled woodworkers are making use of trees lost to emerald ash borers, construction projects, and utility clearances to build some of the finest wood features in today's buildings. Dead, dying or damaged trees that once filled landfills are now being milled into feature walls, flooring, conference tables and many other products, most often without traveling more than 50 miles from stump to final consumer. Solar for homes in Wisconsin
This presentation will showcase solar energy for homes in Wisconsin and make the case that now is the time for builders, contractors, and the public to take a new look at solar. The cost of installed solar on homes has declined over 70% in the past decade, and 600-1000 homes are getting solar electric systems annually in Wisconsin. When incorporated with new construction, the costs can be even lower, and financed into the mortgage. State rebates and federal tax credits help reduce the up-front expenses and will be de-mystified in this session as well.

The economics of zero energy homes: single family insights
While many homeowners love the idea of a home that produces all the energy that it needs, most people assume that a zero-energy home is prohibitively expensive. However, changes in technology effectiveness and costs make zero energy homes much more financially accessible than most people realize. This session will present the results of in-depth cost-optimization research for zero energy and zero energy ready approaches to show what is possible for low-cost construction. Further, we'll explore what cost thresholds matter to consumers and how these homes compare to those thresholds.

Energy labeling: unlocking the value of an energy efficient home
Energy efficient contractors need their work to be valued in the real estate market in order for their homes to be respected and considered. As Wisconsin homeowner demand for energy efficient homes grows, it is clear residents are seeing the value -- lower energy costs, greater comfort and other benefits. So, how do we empower the real estate market to follow suit and give homes with energy-saving features more value? How do homeowners showcase the value of their photovoltaic arrays and other energy efficient features? Join us as we explore these questions and discuss how standardized energy labeling like Home Energy Score can document efficiency upgrades.

The evolution of geothermal heating and cooling
Geothermal heating and cooling isn't a new technology. A focus on renewable energy and energy tax credits in recent years has created this impression even though the technology dates back 50+ years. For many nations, geothermal dominates the heating and cooling market. This presentation traces the history of geothermal heat pumps, discusses misconceptions, delves into market characteristics, and provides insights into energy savings and other benefits to the consumers and the economy.

Consumer connections: better ways to market energy services
Whose problem are you trying to solve? Many energy service providers design their marketing to solve their own problems, and then struggle with not getting as many customers as they wanted. A consumer-centric approach helps make sure that you're marketing what people want and where and when they want it. This presentation will introduce a framework for understanding the stages of marketing and look at direct research done with 1,200 homeowners about their preferences for home energy improvements. It will draw on years of experience marketing energy upgrades and improving slow-moving programs.

Estimating in the modern era
The remodeling and building world is finally catching up with modern industry and the importance of understanding and embracing transparency. If you use 1.45 or 1.68 multipliers to determine project cost after COGS, you are doing it wrong. You are using a sloppy methodology to do precision work. You are like a surgeon with a chainsaw. This session teaches you how to radically improve your estimating method, improve your net profit, improve your company’s health, correctly identify area for improvement and growth, and position your company ahead of the competition. Getting the most out of your manometer
In building science, a lot of what we measure is invisible and much of it is related to pressure and flow. Most of us do blower door or duct leakage testing or both, but there are many other important things we can be measuring using our manometers that can help us figure out what is going on in a home. This session will give you an introduction into measuring draft, CAZ depressurization, room pressures, zone pressure diagnostics, pressure pans, static pressures on an air handler and tools for long term data logging of pressures.
