Getting to zero energy with structural insulated panels
Learn about the fundamentals of structural insulated panels (SIPs) and examine the role SIPs play in passive, integrative design. We will examine the Rocky Mountain Institute’s Innovation Center as a best-in-class case study so that the participants will better understand SIPs. (This session will be repeated on Friday, February 15 from 12:45-2 PM.)

Part I: attic and roof building science and code
Attics and roofs can be configured in so many ways in terms of function, moisture, and heat performance that we need to get the science right and make sure each configuration meets the building code. This is no small feat, so we will work through the science and the code for a variety of attic and roof assembly setups.

Part II: attic and roof configurations that work and why
Using the building science and building code for attics and roofs, we will work through which roof and attic configurations work and why. Peter will work with a local high performance builder and roof/attic mock-ups to get into the nitty-gritty of materials, sequencing, and trades interaction for high performance attics and roofs.

Part III: attics and roofs that don't work and why
Taking building investigations and turning them into building science puzzles is fun and informative. In Part II, we learned how to configure high performance attics and roofs. What can we learn from roofs and attics that have had problems? We can learn about tolerances attics and roofs have for heat and moisture management and quite a bit about how to and not to retrofit existing attics and roofs.

Avoiding the white kitchen trend
The design world has offered up more than a few monstrous concepts over time—Zubaz pants, bowl cuts, carpeted bathrooms, and now white kitchens. What is it about these trends that makes them such terrible offenders? What makes a white kitchen so egregious? This session will look at micro and macro trends, and examine what makes one thing a timeless classic while the other is destined for the land fill. Bonus points for correctly identifying the value of pink flamingo lawn ornaments.
