Urban wood: using trees from your building sites in your building designs
Wisconsin Urban Wood and similar networks of arborists, sawmills, and skilled woodworkers are making use of trees lost to emerald ash borers, construction projects, and utility clearances to build some of the finest wood features in today's buildings. Dead, dying or damaged trees that once filled landfills are now being milled into feature walls, flooring, conference tables and many other products, most often without traveling more than 50 miles from stump to final consumer. This presentation will reveal a network of small businesses producing amazing products from a sustainable resource once considered a waste stream.

The economics of zero energy homes: single family insights
While many homeowners love the idea of a home that produces all the energy that it needs, most people assume that a zero-energy home is prohibitively expensive. However, changes in technology effectiveness and costs make zero energy homes much more financially accessible than most people realize. This session will present the results of in-depth cost-optimization research for zero energy and zero energy ready approaches to show what is possible for low-cost construction. Further, we'll explore what cost thresholds matter to consumers and how these homes compare to those thresholds.

Improving the performance of concrete flooring
This presentation will address the need for sealing concrete and the different methods and products used to achieve a properly sealed surface. We'll discuss the ways a concrete surface can be negatively impacted; identify performance needs for different environments; and talk about the methods used to assess qualities of cured concrete. We’ll use samples of concrete treated with several types of sealers to show their resistance to staining and deterioration when they come in contact with different solutions.
