Modular prefab construction has the capability to bring high-performance construction to a broader market by standardizing certain critical construction details and systems. This presentation illustrates the advantages and challenges of modular prefab design for a low-energy home, in this case a DOE Zero Energy Ready Home. The presentation will explain the dimensional constraints, structural and mechanical considerations, and logistics of permitting and inspections. Particular attention will be paid to the HVAC system design for this all-electric low-load house, including lessons learned and our strategies for future work.
